Beginner Woodworking: Start Here
A practical starting point for new woodworkers who want a manageable first project, a small tool set, and a clear path forward.
Begin with the finish line
A first project should teach useful skills without asking you to solve too many new problems at once. Start by choosing something small enough to complete with the tools, space, and lumber you can reasonably handle.
A simple learning order
Learn enough measuring and marking to lay out parts accurately. Learn how a plan and cut list describe those parts. Then practice a simple joint and complete a useful project. Each finished build gives you a better reason to add the next skill or tool.
What you should know before project one
You do not need broad mastery. You need enough knowledge to choose a manageable project, understand its plan, perform its operations according to the tool instructions, and complete the surface preparation and finish. Use the pages in this section to remove those early uncertainties before expanding your shop.
